Leaving right now. Will be meeting an FJ Cruiser and an older Toyota Taco at the Pioneer Crossing (if they both show up).
Should be old snow on the ground with some light flurries forecast for today.

Land Rover Trek 196 – The Wall – 13 January 2011
I met John and Marty at 0730 at the Pioneer Crossing for breakfast and we were underway towards Nixon by 0800. From Nixon it was on to the south end of Winnemucca Lake and then up Coyote Canyon to Nache Peak and the old tungsten mines at Nightingale.
After a few minutes at Nightingale it was on along the east flank of the mountain range another two miles and a climb to the top of the ridge and some more mines. Then we continued north along the east side of the crest in the rotten snow, ice and mud. The climbing in the “stuff” wasn’t bad but the descents and the off-camber sections were a bit treacherous.
After passing a small horse herd and a few cattle we climbed back to the top of the ridge overlooking where the School Bus Canyon trail descends to the floor of Winnemucca Lake. With the ice and snow this wasn’t a good day to go that way. If for some reason we couldn’t get through there was no way we would be able to climb back out.
Once reaching the wash trail at Stone House Canyon, John just had to do a bit of rock posing. Then at a large forty five degree slab Marty also got into the act. After dropping down the canyon to the lake we stopped at the Paleo-Indian Fish Bone Caves for lunch. The caves were occupied about 9000 years ago. The University of Nevada archaeologists dug up several bodies and recovered hundreds of artifacts back in the sixties here.
From the caves we continued on down to the foot of School Bus and drove up the canyon to the buses. After a bit I asked John if he was ready to see “The Wall”. For some reason he has wanted me to take him to the School Bus trail but he didn’t know that its main attraction was “The Wall”. John never ceases to perplex me.
“The Wall is perhaps four miles up the canyon. I elected to take the by-pass on the north shelf of the canyon that overlooks the wall. It turned out that in the six years since I had last been here the by-pass trail is washed out so we had to return to the canyon bottom and drive right up to the foot of the wall. There wasn’t any way to crawl up the wall as it was pretty much ice-coated.
I took a wrong turn going back down the canyon towards the buses and John ran into the canyon side at a very narrow spot. This after bragging about how his truck could fit through narrower spots than Marty and my trucks could fit. FYI: John has an eighties Toyota pickup; Marty has a Toyota FJ Cruiser and I have the Land Rover Discovery. Go figure - -
Our final stop of the day was at the old MGL tungsten mill site and then it was back through Nixon and Wadsworth to Fernley where we parted at about 4:30pm. Another great trek!
I'll post a few pictures shortly - but to see them all go to MuddyOval
