I went to Jay Peak Sunday January 16, 2011. It was cold, about 10 degrees. Tried to spend most of the day in the woods so I could stay out of the wind and stay warm (it's hard work skiing through the trees).
At one point I was on Timbuktu, a tree trail on the far side of the mountain. I kept going a little further and a little further out of bounds because the snow was way better out there. Untracked, untouched, I was farming! Suddenly realized I was kind of far out and then I found Last Chance, which is the last run out back to the trail. Breathed a sigh of relief, headed down to the car where Pete was waiting for me. (He broke his collarbone last week, no skiing for him )
I had a great idea. I wanted to ski The Dip. The Dip is out past Timbuktu. It's out of bounds and you end up down by Rt 242. If you don't have a driver to come get you, you have to hoof it all the way back to the resort, ie: not fun. But the snow is deep and virtually untouched. A lot of people go out there, but not many. There are tracks to follow (or stay near anyways) so you don't get lost. Didn't take much for Pete to agree to meet me. He's never skied The Dip. He was jealous.
I headed out. By myself (disclaimer: NOT A GOOD IDEA TO SKI IN THE WOODS ALONE!!!). It was nothing short of freaking awesome! Deep deep powder! Lots of farming. Crazy steep in some places. I fell twice, head downhill, skis uphill, was a little nervous, but I stayed calm and methodical and got myself up and back on my skis again. Pete and I kept cell phone contact. It was hard, but it was a lot of fun! I've never been so proud of myself.
I'm hurting today haha My back, my legs, and especially my abs! Kinda feel like I got hit by a truck, but it feels good in a weird way. I accomplished something all by myself without any help from anyone (well except for the car ride back to the lodge) and it feels good.
We were talking to a ski patrol we know when we got back (no, we didn't mention The Dip) and he was telling us how busy they were because a skier went missing off of Andre's Paradise (opposite side of the mountain from Timbuktu). He was alone. Supposed to meet his friend at 2pm (it was 5pm when we were talking to him). Patrol had checked the whole area and didn't find him, saw tracks headed down past the point of no return, so they had to come back to the shack and get snow shoes to go further out. Still don't know if they found him... This is why you should never, ever go out in the woods alone while skiing. I was lucky. Pete knew where I was and I had a good run. But that could have changed at any moment. Be careful and ski with friends.
That is all. Sorry, no pix. Hard to take pix when you're by yourself haha
