Michael Williams - former Rail Road Commissioner of Texas
He is running for the Senate to attempt to take the spot of Kay Bailey (Bailout) Hutchinson. Michael Williams was set to take her spot after the gubernatorial election last year but KBH didn't give her seat up quite so easily. Rick Perry was poised to appoint MW to her seat after she was so sure she would win the election for governor. She backed out of that and decided to finish her term after losing the election.
Michael Williams is TEA party backed. Speaks at several rallies across the state. He is well respected and very well liked across Texas. He has been Rail Road Commissioner since the late 90s, I've voted for him twice already and he won his elections by a good margin. In 1984 he ran for a local office here in Midland (his hometown) and lost and he blames that mainly on not showing his likeness on his ads until late in the campaign. He claims if he had shown himself on the ads earlier he would have had better chances of winning.
He was in Midland last night and I've spoke to him a few times on facebook here and there. I used to intern for Congressman Conaway (Texas - 11 - R) here in Midland so I know how things work normally with elected officials. I thought the person on his facebook was some staff person representing him online. He posted that he was going to be at a fund raiser and I left a comment saying I didn't know there was an event for him in Midland yesterday and he invited me. Well, I figured it was a staff person inviting me. I figured what the hell, I'll go anyway.
I got there, he was having a conversation with some donors (I was probably the only person who couldn't afford to donate more than 20 bucks last night, actually, I was probably the only person who didn't donate in the 4 digit or higher range). I was by 30 years the youngest person there. He was speaking to other donors and interrupted them (not in a rude way) to introduce himself to me and to the people he was speaking to. He then introduced me to them as his "facebook friend". So I get the idea that he actually had been the one I had spoke to online. This impressed me that a) he actually runs his own stuff b) he recognized me from the web.
A little more about him, he's a Christian, he's extremely conservative, supports the second amendment, TEA party backed, plans to cut a lot of the bureacracies of the federal government and give them back to the states (ie Department of Energy, DO Agriculture, DO Education etc. etc etc.). Oh yeah, he's a black man too.
So my question to the liberals, "what's that about the TEA party being racists?"
